CERES -- Police arrested a Turlock man Monday night after he tried to walk out of a market with a cart full of groceries, then hurled a small knife at a police dog, authorities said Tuesday.
About 5:30 p.m., a man later identified as Danny Armenta, 48, pushed a cart holding about $116 worth of meat, beer and other food out of Cost Less Foods, at 1610 E. Hatch Road, said Sgt. Allen McKay, Ceres police spokesman.
According to police, a clerk asked Armenta if he had a receipt, and Armenta felt around in his pockets for a moment. Then he took off, McKay said, with two clerks chasing him.
He ran across Hatch and stopped in the Home Depot parking lot, where, McKay said, he pulled out a knife. He waved it at the clerks, asking them "who wanted it first," McKay said.
Police officer Joe Wren and his K-9, Axel, found Armenta trying to climb over the stone fence behind K-Mart, McKay said. Armenta ignored Wren's orders to stop, and walked west toward 7-Eleven, at 1305 Herndon Road.
Wren again told Armenta to stop but, according to the officer, Armenta appeared to take a "fighting stance" as the men stood fewer than 15 feet apart. The officer released Axel, as Armenta threw a small folding knife at the dog.
Axel bit Armenta and took him to the ground. Armenta was taken to a hospital for medical treatment for the dog bites.
He was booked at the Stanislaus County Jail on suspicion of robbery, assault with a deadly weapon and the attack on Axel, who was not injured. He remains in custody with a bail of $75,000. He is scheduled to appear in court today.
