In our rapidly increasing authoritarian society, the like of which inspired the nightmare scenarios of Kafka, Orwell and thingy (among others), an important consolation for Jane/John Q Public is that, whatever else, the bastards simply don’t have a clue what’s going on in your mind. But, will this always be the case? Disturbing news to the contrary, regarding a potential threat to our ultimate freedom, was first broken in the UK last month by the British daily newspaper The Guardian. In his front page account (February 9, 2007), ‘The brain scan that can read people’s intentions’, science correspondent Ian Sample comments: “If brain-reading can be refined, it could quickly be adopted to assist interrogations of criminals and terrorists, and even usher in a ‘Minority Report’ era (as portrayed in the Steven Spielberg science fiction film of that name) where judgements are handed down before the law is broken on the strength of an incriminating brain scan.” For the full story, check out the following webpage: www.guardian.co.uk/frontpage/story/0,,2009229,00.html
